Whether you’re a native, a vacationer, have only been here once, or are planning your first visit, there are TONS of things to do and see in South Carolina. Our amazing state is home to some of the greatest colleges, tourist attractions, events, and even a few celebrities. We have something for everyone!
1.Almost everyone’s favorite place to visit is Riverbanks Zoo & Botanical Garden. People travel from all over to visit the aquarium and various exhibits. Richland and Lexington county residents get “Free Fridays” in January and February of each year.
2.Another local favorite is Lake Murray, which is central to South Carolina. Lake Murray is considered the Jewel of South Carolina and is known for its public boat ramps, beaches and various islands. With approximately 50,000 acres in size and 650+ miles of shoreline, it spans several counties & hosts a variety of events such as Drift Jam and an array of boat parades. The most popular public beach is located on the Lexington side of the Lake Murray Dam and is accessible from May through September of every year.
3.The Soda City Market is Columbia’s take on the European style street open-air market. You can find everything from crafts to food trucks to coffee and buskers. Generally there are around 150 vendors at this open air market, which is open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. every Saturday on Main Street in down town Columbia, rain or shine.
4. Just up the road a bit is Kershaw County, home of Historic Camden – which has a rich history in the Revolutionary War – you can visit any of its museums to learn more about the County’s history, connection, and preservation initiatives. Kershaw County is also home to the Carolina Cup, which is an annual steeplechase horse race held at the Springdale Race Course in Camden, South Carolina. Attendance is usually in the tens of thousands and draws a crowd from all over the country.
5. Of course, living in the Midlands has its vacation benefits, and the sights are never far away – mostly within a 2 hour drive. We have our pick of any of the beautiful South Carolina State Parks, which boast moutains, waterfalls, or we can take a short drive in the other direction and visit any of South Carolina’s gorgeous beaches. Some of the more popular ones are Myrtle Beach, Pawley’s Island, Folly Beach, Mount Pleasant, Hilton Head Island and Edisto Island.
